Tyler, the Creator - Call Me If You Get Lost

Image
Saw him bloom in 'Flower Boy', then he told a breathtaking narrative of heartbreak in 'IGOR'. So what does Tyler, the Creator's sixth record, 'Call Me When You Get Lost,' offer?  The rollout of the 'Call Me When You Get Lost' has been fascinating. A massive billboard with the album's title had the phone number +1 (855) 444-8888. Call that number a part of the Momma Talk Interlude plays. Then with a few visual teasers, Tyler also unleashed the album's first single, 'LUMBERJACK.' A sampling of Gravediggaz's '2 Cups of Blood' makes for a nicely cacophonic instrumental for the track. Meanwhile, Tyler satisfyingly flaunts his  'seven zeroes'  while selling out Madison Square Garden, dismissing his critics that  'treat him like that boy from Malcolm in the Middle'  and  'cannot fuck with his performance of magic new wand'.  Additionally, DJ Drama is a hyping force within the track and continues to be s

Doja Cat - Planet Her

Image
The 'Hot Pink' era of Doja Cat saw a skyrocketing rise to stardom for the American singer-songwriter, so the space aesthetic for the cover art for her third album, 'Planet Her,' is seemingly fitting. Doja has proven herself to be a decent hitmaker, with a couple of tracks from her Hot Pink record like 'Say So' and 'Like That' being the craze on Tik-Tok. However, despite those fun hits, 'Hot Pink' struggled for consistency as an album, with the deep cuts being forgettably mediocre. Hopefully, 'Planet Her' sees an improvement. In the lead up to the release of 'Planet Her', Doja Cat released the album's first single, 'Kiss Me More', featuring SZA. A groovy tune, Doja is sweetly catchy over a delightful bassline as SZA is at her usual soothing self on her guest verse. However, then came 'Need To Know.' The galactic flavoured production from Dr Luke is serviceable. However, the ad-libs from Doja Cat across this trac

H.E.R - Back of My Mind

Image
'Back of My Mind' is the debuting album from singer-songwriter 'H.E.R' that starts well with the opening 'We Made It.' The production is finely rhythmic with its percussion and bassline, complementing a blissful 'H.E.R.' Additionally, the guitar riff and piano outro was a nice touch. H.E.R is still the  'greatest all of the time in the back of her ex-lover's mind'  in the title track, while Ty Dolla $ign background vocals are a mint breeze. In 'Trauma', anxiety is a seeming force within H.E.R. Over Hit-Boy's minimalistic instrumental, she recalls  'overthinking, needing to shrink, and stressing on the petty things.'  Meanwhile, Cordae delivers compelling rap verses, questioning  why compassion is seemingly a weakness and why is his empathy is misleading.  In the love ballad, 'Damage,' the sampling of Herb Alpert's 'Making Love in The Rain' makes for a starry instrumental, as Ant Clemons and H.E.R harm

Polo G - Hall of Fame

Image
'Hall of Fame' is the third record from Chicago rapper Polo G and begins intensely with 'Painting Pictures.' Over a decent piano-trap instrumental, a sincere Polo G paints the violent gang life before his rise to fame with anecdotes of the close friends he had lost.  " Block died, we threw up X's, TimTim died, we threw up T's, Twin'nem died, banging L's, I wish they ain't never leave, For Killer, K's to the brain, I', scoring if I catch the G's... I was playing AAU with Ed it was ball is life Wish I could've warned him before he lost his life.'  Polo G damns the gang life with ' SAY, 'Fuck The Opposites,' but deep down, we all alike,'  criticizing its reckless nature and how conflict could arise based on which gang you affiliate. Polo G continues his brutal imagery of the gang life in his smash hit 'RAPSTAR.'  "Homicides when we lurk, I'ma step till my feet hurt, Been putting them streets fi

Japanese Breakfast - Jubilee

Image
'Paprika', A track simply about 'revelling in the beauty of music, is a lively opener to Japanese Breakfast's third LP, 'Jubilee.' The combination of synth waves, drums, strings and horns are a fulfilling touch, complementing a soothing Michelle Zauner enjoying 'a rush.' Looking to mend a broken relationship in 'Be Sweet,' a charismatic Zauner is complemented by the stimulating synths and the groovy basslines as she delivers an absolute earworm of a chorus. The production in 'Kokomo, In' is a field of flowers under the weather of Spring through its cheerful strings and relaxing bassline and percussion. The track is a sweet ballad as Zauner awaits for the return of an ex-lover that manifests the 'fear of leaving an oven on.' Vocally here, Zauner pleasantly rides the track's spring-flavoured instrumental. Additionally, the segments of the guitar riff in 'Kokomo, In' were a nice touch. In 'Slide Tackling', a det

Mustafa - When Smoke Rises

Image
The soothingly chilling anecdotes of Mustafa's friends lost through the gang violence within Toronto with the resulting trauma and grief make a riveting debuting piece in 'When Smoke Rises.' 'Stay Alive', which starts 'When Smoke Rises' wonderfully, is a warning to youth to distance themselves from gang activity. Over a pleasing acoustic guitar, the soothing Mustafa advises that 'the tribes and street signs' will not be worth it for the youth. Taking part in these tribes and street signs will result in a 'price on their heads' and the grim possibility of the 'cameras and cops being the stars on their mothers' news screens.' The euphemism in 'Don't crease you air forces, just say inside tonight, you know what's outside'. The imagery of 'you say it's okay, but you tucked your chain like if they take it, I won't see you for a while, and I tell you how I feel, in case it's the last time.' A great
